I Am Not a Godless Heathen

To paraphrase my friend Jack who may have parphrased me…

Forgive me father for I have sinned. It has been one week since my last blog…

Yesterday I found a FABULOUS list of intelligent folk who are self-professed atheists. Dear Readers in case you’ve been binge drinking and paying no attention I am among that atheistic number.
Since many of my heroes are listed among them I find a recent poll stating that the majority of Americans distrust and fear atheists to be depressing at best and unsurprising at worst.

To quote John Stuart Mill:
Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.

To quote Rachael C. Black:
Although it is not true that all religious types are stupid people, it is true that most stupid types are religious.

Eleven years of AA meetings has screwed with my head, but don’t they love it when I speak up and eschew the god thing. Heh.
Burn her! She’s a Witch!
rachael is an angel! rachael is a devil

Please note the purposeful use of the word RELIGIOUS and not spiritual. Although some days I’m not sure of the latter either.

There are of course exceptions. Einstein was religious. Of course he was a Jew.
Burn him! He’s a Witch!

You can be religious and be very smart, and you can be atheist and a moron. It does seem like an awful lot of brilliant people are atheists though and the majority of fundies (FUNDIES dammit so no flames in the comments) are mindless sheep with IQs hovering between 90 to 115.

Read a quote by Marilyn Vos Savant (you gotta love her name) and a study on IQ and the correlation with a belief in god. Ms. Savant has an IQ over 200 so I bow to her wisdom in these matters as she actually USES it to learn and teach. The study she cited states simply that people with an IQ over 160 are far more likely to be atheists than those with IQs below 160. I’m not gonna tell you where my numbers fall on this scale but you can guess what it exceeds. For more information send a self-addressed postage paid envelope along with a groveling plea and check for $10.00.
Not that I’m arrogant about it.

Miss R: Reno’s Own Egomaniac with Low Self Esteem.
And that’s MISS Paradox to you.

I’m pretty sure that atheist morons have the same reasons for their belief as do brilliant religious people. Their belief is based on the emotional rather than the rational.
Lookee here there’s some commonality after all.

So, I am not a Godless Heathen since Heathens believe in many gods or at least not the Judeo-Christian-Islamic variety. I’m just godless.

Let’s get something straight here; just because I am an atheist does not mean I condone murder, adultery or stealing. Sure they’re all fun but I don’t condone them.

The study I referred to in the opening paragraph states the following information:

Americans do NOT like atheists and trust them less than they do other groups. The depth of this distrust is freakish

More than 2,000 randomly selected people were interviewed by researchers from the University of Minnesota.
Asked whether they would disapprove of a child’s wish to marry an atheist, 47.6 percent of those interviewed said yes.

Asked the same question about Muslims and African-Americans, the yes responses fell to 33.5 percent and 27.2 percent, respectively.

The yes responses for Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and conservative Christians were 18.5 percent, 18.5 percent, 11.8 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively.

When asked which groups did not share their vision of American society 39.5 percent of those interviewed mentioned atheists.
Asked the same question about Muslims and homosexuals, the figures dropped to a slightly less depressing 26.3 percent and 22.6 percent, respectively. Oh yeah less depressing.

For Hispanics, Jews, Asian-Americans and African-Americans, they fell further to 7.6 percent, 7.4 percent, 7.0 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively.

There’s a lot more but the bottom line:
Atheists are seen by most Americans (especially conservative Christians) as freaks of nature and are, in the words of sociologist Penny Edgell, the study’s lead researcher, “a glaring exception to the rule of increasing tolerance over the last 30 years.”

Wow. Cool. I’m packing my bag for a trip to the re-education camps and getting ready to sew a patch of colored cloth on my jacket. Wonder what happens if these open-minded other Americans find out I’m Jewish by Injection and don’t tolerate authority well.
Say Good Night Rachael
Good night Rachael

  1. Sigh. We have such a long way to go, don’t we? I despise religion. I would hang out with Atheists any day. I myself am a Heathen–the Devil herself according to Fundies, since I am Pagan, a polytheist, a woman, a whore, and so much more that they love to hate. Yay me!

Anyway–there is a big difference between spirituality and religion, and that is something most people don’t understand. I agree with the IQ thing. Why does anyone care if someone thinks there are no gods and think that they will be worm fodder when they die? How can that possibly hurt anyone?

Ugh. That is why I am a Thelemite. It is a matter of personal Will–always, and no one elses business. Period.

  2. I’m with you.
Went as high as I could go as High Priestess in a Gaellic Coven some years ago. Finally decided that dogma was dogma though. Even though I still sport a pentagram tattoo on my shoulder (my own design) I’m an atheist.
A favorite saying of mine is:
Religion is for people afraid of Hell
Spirituality is for people who have been there

Do you practice a form of Thelema based on the Gold Dawn precepts? Facinating and intriguing stuff!
If I were to go back to any tenet it would be polytheism. Who can hate or disagree with the cycles of the earth?

    Yours in Heathen Whoredom,

  3. Don’t the ambiguous fall by default into the agnostic category? I mean, that is the whole point of the term, right? Not knowing?

Myself, I have never heard anyone say he or she was going to go out and kill people because God does not or might not exist.

I have, though, heard a whole lot of fundies say they are going to go kill a bunch of people because God does exist.

Given a choice of who is scary there, the person whacking people for God gets my vote every time.

  4. That’s cool–was your coven an initiatory body? Alexandrian? Gardnerian? Or by being Gaelic did it follow a more Anglican tradition?

Dogma is definitely Dogma, despite what is seems to be wearing. We work hard to not fall into it in our Temple. Always have to challenge ourselves and analyze why things are the way they are–why we do the things we do.

I have to say no to Golden Dawn precepts–or OTO for that matter. We are our own brand of Thelema. No Crowleyanity here, or Israel Regardie for that matter. We prefer going to the source–The Book of the Law, and working the current directly with spiritual advisors so to speak. Makes me sound wacky, I know, if your not experienced with practice, but I have a feeling you’ll know what I mean.

I think what sets us apart form other Thelemic groups is that we acknowledge the different path of the female, and have separate magickal roles for women besides setting them on the altar to “receive” the male. We are female driven–female headed, and understand that women have a role just as vital but much different than magicians. The Golden Dawn is a bit androgynous, and the OTO is solar-phallic. We try to be more balanced, while acknowledging the difference. It is very effective magickally.

It is through initiation that I shed any remnants of depression, cyclothymia, anxiety problems, etc. I didn’t know how far I could go into it before in our beginning conversations. It has been much more effective than any therapy I ever had.

As for Atheism–I spent a time there myself. There is much debate regarding occult practice and the origin of what takes place magickally. Whether it is mind, as the Neo-Platonists concluded or surmised, or a product of something outside ourselves. We practice Scientific Illuminism, which has been enough “proof” for me that it is not mind. In the end, when we die, I guess we’ll all know for sure.

  5. Your so briliiant?

Yet you fail to comprehend that your list points to the real reason they dont believe in God–which it so obvious. In this test..you failed miserably

Yout List includes those whom God has given great gifts to. Personal gifts. Gifts that puffed up their ego’s—like Fame, Wealth, Mucsical Talent, Intelligence

Your list is that of the arrogant. They feel they dont need God. They are superior. Your not a mystery to Christians. As of now you posted a list of the lost. It looks like a mighty list to you. But its just pathetic

The truth is not figured out like some equation. It is revealed by those who ask God in humility what the truth is. Do that..and you’ll see –if you can climb down off that Throne you placed yourself on. Its not about IQ. Its about arrogance.

    1 Corinthians 1
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written:
    “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c]
20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”[d]

  6. Woo Hoo!!!!
Your operation was a success. Hope that your Humor-ectomy went smoothly.
Bless you my son. Here’s something to cheer you up and is paraphrased from my friend Wayne Blank:
The “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone” incident is one of the most well-known lessons of the Bible. A woman, who had been caught in the act of adultery was brought to Jesus Christ by the scribes (Lawyers) and Pharisees as a test to see if the Messiah was a liberal in matters of the Law of God.
In response to their deceitful query, He didn’t condemn the woman, not because He was a liberal, not because He condoned her sin, but because the men who brought the woman to Him were Hypocrites.
He was the only person there that day who was free of sin, the only one who had the right to “cast the first stone.” He didn’t stone her (or her accusers), but instead forgave her and told her to “sin no more.”
How’s that glass house treating you babe?
Oh by the way… try spell check next time. you’ll have a better chance of amusing myself and the other arrogant intelligent fools.

  7. Joe sure does love his circular arguments. I think that it was pretty obvious that the lists were in fact people of fame who either have no belief in a God or are simply unsure and have publicly proclaimed such.
Joe, I will attempt to use small words so you are not confused. If the lists that the Heathen Rachel placed on her blog contained only the names of people you would meet on the street it would have had zero impact. No Joe, not that sort of impact (though I could think of some people whom I would like to impact with that list, if it were printed on a baseball bat) the type of impact was a person is forced to come to the sobering realization that zealots such as yourself are bad for humanity. I have known the author for a while now and she is indeed a brilliant person. So ummm Joe. Go choke on the Eucharist until the lack of oxygen flowing to your damaged little brain caused spatial, visual and auditory hallucinations and you are “with god”. Please?
